Henry Ford was the founder of the Ford Motor Company and a key proponent of the assembly line method of production. The assembly line method of production meant that individual components of, for example, a motor car, could be added piece by piece by different workers. One worker, for example, might be responsible for fitting the wheels, whereas another worker would then be responsible for adding the steering wheel, and another then responsible for fitting the engine, and so on.
In this way it became quicker and cheaper to produce motor cars, and those savings could be passed on to the consumer. Ordinary people were now able to afford a car. One drawback of the assembly line method of production was that workers, as they became more specialized, also became more easily replaceable, which in the long term led to lower wages.
