The old village inn didn't have a name, in-keeping with its status as a humble, unprepossessing place where nothing much ever happened. Before Rip visits the land of Nod, it was quite a tranquil little place, reflecting the personality of the innkeeper, Nicholas Vedder, who used to spend his days sitting beneath the shade of a big tree, moving only when the shade moved. The inn was a place where men such as Rip and the local schoolmaster, Derrick Van Bummel, could sit around all day, engaging in civilized debate about matters of no importance.
However, like everything else in the village, the inn changes dramatically over the years—as Rip discovers to his horror upon waking up. For one thing, the old building's been destroyed, replaced by a large, rickety structure which looks like it's seen better days. Over the front door of the building is painted the words "The Union Hotel, by Jonathan Doolittle." And it's not just the exterior that's changed. Once upon a time, the old inn was a haven of peace and tranquility. But its replacement has become a hive of activity: a nerve center of revolutionary fervor and packed with aggressive, disputatious men engaged in violent political debate.
