The Pilgrim's Progress is a religious allegory of the Christian believer's faith journey. Christian, as his name suggests, stands for the individual Christian believer, who must keep to the path of righteousness if he's to make it to the Celestial City, which is an allegory for Heaven.
The long, and often tortuous, nature of Christian's journey is meant to remind us that following this path is by no means an easy business, even for the most devout. For example, Christian finds himself briefly diverted by the far less demanding secular ethics of Mr. Worldly Wiseman. And wherever he goes there are more temptations in store, threatening to take him even further away from his ultimate spiritual goal. In presenting his pilgrim's epic journey, Bunyan's message is clear: being a Christian is difficult, but ultimately worthwhile.
