William Henry Harrison died thirty-one days after his inauguration. Harrison became sick in March after being caught in a downpour, though his physicians mistakenly thought his illness had begun because of the weather during his inauguration. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and was treated by bloodletting, heated suction cups, and herbal remedies. These did not work and Harrison died. He became the first president to die while in office and kicked of a constitutional crisis because there was not a unanimous opinion among the political class as to whether the Vice President was supposed to be inaugurated into the office or whether the Vice President was merely to execute the duties of the office while it remained vacant. Ultimately, this crisis was resolved in favor of the former view.
