When General Zaroff initially descends the steps of his magnificent chateau, he immediately recognizes Sanger Rainsford and remarks that it is an honor to welcome such a celebrated hunter to his home. After shaking Sanger Rainsford's hand, the general mentions that he has read Rainsford's book about hunting snow leopards in Tibet. Judging from Zaroff's comment, he recognizes Sanger Rainsford because he is familiar with Rainsford's literature and exploits in the field of hunting. As an expert hunter himself, General Zaroff has read numerous books on hunting and is aware of Rainsford's celebrated status as a renowned big game hunter. During dinner, Zaroff also tells Rainsford,
"Perhaps . . . you were surprised that I recognized your name. You see, I read all books on hunting published in English, French, and Russian. I have but one passion in my life, Mr. Rainsford, and it is the hunt" (Connell, 5).
General Zaroff eventually informs Rainsford that he hunts humans on his isolated island because he considers Man to be the most dangerous game. The general proceeds to hunt Rainsford throughout Ship-Trap Island for three consecutive days but Rainsford manages to outwit the general and survives the game.
