Between the present and the past, there are a number of characters in Holes!
Let's start with Stanley's family. Stanley's father, Mr. Yelnats, is an inventor. He is persistent but unlucky, due to a curse on his family. Mrs. Yelnats does not believe in the curse. She tries to remind the family of the luck they have had in the past.
The bad luck is caused by Elya Yelnats, Stanley's "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather." Elya was given a pig by Madame Zeroni, who happens to be the great-great-great-grandmother of Hector Zeroni. Elya was supposed to carry Madame Zeroni to the top of a mountain, but he broke this promise.
Elya's son, Stanley Yelnats I, was robbed by Kissin' Kate Barlow, a former schoolteacher who became an outlaw when her lover, Sam, was murdered. Kate was white and Sam was black, which made their love forbidden at the time. Charles Walker is the man who leads the town against Sam because he is angry that Kate rejected him, and coming from the richest family in town, he is not used to being denied something he wants.
Camp Green Lake's Warden is a descendant of Charles Walker. She makes the boys dig holes because she is searching for Kate Barlow's treasure. Mr. Sir is a rough counselor at camp known for his meanness. Mr. Pendanski seems friendlier, but he also lacks a level of care for the children. Mr. Pendanski is in charge of D Tent.
Rex, known as X-Ray, is small but takes charge of the boys in D Tent. He gives everyone a nickname. Alan, known as Squid, is tough but follows X-Ray. Jose, known as Magnet, has a talent for stealing things. You can guess how Theodore gets his nickname Armpit! Stanley thinks that Ricky, known as Zigzag, is weird and violent.
