How was the venture to establish a new colony at Jamestown designed?

The design of Jamestown was an entrepreneurial project. The Virginia Company of London funded the expedition, with the support of King James I, to find gold and to establish a trade route through Virginia to the Pacific. Britain's goal was to expand their wealth and claim territories in North America to take advantage of the area's rich resources. The original colonists arrived in Jamestown in 1607 and began building a new settlement. They faced many challenges, which made it hard to meet the goals of the Virginia Company to extract gold, silver, and other valuable resources from the region. Instead, many of the colonists died because of disease, famine, and a lack of clean water. One could argue that the only reason the settlement survived was due to the leadership of Captain John Smith and the courage of Pocahontas.
