Crazy Rich Asians is a 2018 romantic film directed by Jon M. Chu, which is based on the eponymous novel written by Singaporean-American author Kevin Kwan. Both the movie and the book tell the story Rachel Chu, an economics professor at NYU, and her boyfriend, Nick Young, who go to Singapore to attend the wedding of Nick's best friend. Once there, Rachel discovers that her boyfriend and his family are one of the richest families in Singapore.
The movie and the book cover many socially relevant themes; both the author and the director explore the notions of love, family, and friendships, which are probably the central themes. We learn what family means to Rachel and to Nick and how it impacts their lives. Other important themes are socioeconomic class and wealth—we see how social status affects the views and opinions of people and their behavior. Finally, there are the themes of culture, tradition and gender roles; we learn about the importance of tradition and its influence, and we learn of the positions of both men and women in the society.
