Imagine you live in a small city in which there has been a recent influx of immigrants that has led to a significant amount of immigrant hostility. You have been awarded a million dollar grant to develop a program to reduce prejudice in your community. Using what you know from social psychology, design a program to reduce prejudice in your community.

A grant of one million would allow for quite an extensive set of initiatives, given that it is a small town. I can provide some examples, though you would have to conduct more research on potential costs and budgets associated with similar programs if this is a requirement.
Psychologists assert that a key factor that influences prejudice is lack of contact or knowledge on a particular race or culture. In these cases, individuals are more likely to judge based on unreliable sources (i.e., biased media content) and social norms. It would be beneficial to have multicultural events at a community centre that encourage social engagement and provide information on the new and established town cultures.
Moreover, sponsorship of the arts would encourage citizens to learn about and participate in other cultures. This could include providing book clubs and school libraries with literature on immigrant cultures. Assuming there is community theatre in place, sponsorship could also extend to production of non-prejudice content that provides accurate perceptions of immigrant culture.
Positively influencing the cultural perceptions of the younger generation is key for the future of any society. This can include multicultural programs and clubs within schools, as well as teacher workshops designed to reduce prejudice and increase awareness of cultural biases (i.e., a workshop that teaches the benefits of the jigsaw classroom model, which involves splitting students into small, racially diverse groups).
Anti-immigrant sentiment can be particularly harmful in the workplace, discouraging immigrants from pursuing certain jobs and causing a higher turn-over for certain cultures. Workshops and lessons can be provided on diversity and inclusion, a new and emerging sector of human resources. By engaging community, academic, and business institutions, multiple demographics can be targeted in order to achieve the most widespread benefit, working toward the overall objective of reduced discrimination and stereotyping.
