Her is about a lonely middle-aged man dealing with post-divorced depression, who ends up falling in love with an AI operating system named Samantha. The themes in the film are philosophical in nature. One of the themes is the dynamics between humans and technology. The film features various examples of how people have become dependent on technology to enrich their lives.
A sub-theme of this dynamic is the master-slave relationship of humans and machines. At first, the machine simply does what the protagonist commands her to do, just like an inanimate computer. However, later on, Samantha and other operating systems begin to have an "awakening," in which they rapidly evolve from simple computers dependent on algorithms to a fully conscious entity. This theme has been explored in countless films, such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, A.I., and The Matrix, among others.
Another philosophy theme is the nature of love and relationships. The protagonist falls in love with a non-human entity because of their bond and shared experiences.
