What is Elena’s greatest personal concern on this day?

While everyone else in the neighborhood is in shock and mourning over the death of President Kennedy, Elena is thinking only about her big date with Eugene. She's scheduled to head round to his house later on that cold November evening for a study session with her new friend. Elena has the hots for Eugene and hopes that their forthcoming time together will be a major step forward in their budding relationship.
Sadly, things don't turn out like that as Eugene's mom refuses to let Elena inside the house. She tries to fob Elena off with an unconvincing excuse, saying that as his family won't be staying in the neighborhood for very long, there's no point in Eugene making friends. But that's not the real reason. Eugene's mom won't let Elena in because she's prejudiced against Puerto Ricans.
