Judas Iscariot was one of the original twelve disciples of Jesus. But he notoriously betrayed Jesus to the authorities for thirty pieces of silver. When a crowd descended upon the Garden of Gethsemane to arrest Jesus, Judas identified him by kissing him and calling him "rabbi," or teacher. Ever since then, the name of Judas has been synonymous with betrayal and treachery.
As one would expect, Judas occupies a special place in hell as conceived by Dante in his Inferno. He resides in the very lowest circle of hell, the Ninth Circle of Traitors, or Cocytus. Along with Brutus and Cassius, who betrayed Julius Caesar, Judas is condemned to spend the rest of eternity being chewed up by the ravenous jaws of Satan, depicted here as a triple-headed monster. For the ultimate act of betrayal, Judas is to be trapped in the jaws of the most vicious of Satan's heads while the Prince of Darkness claws away at his back.
