According to the North Carolina Museum of History timeline and the NC Pedia, Nathaniell Batts becomes the first permanent settler in what will later become the State of North Carolina. The settlement was an English settlement located near the Chowan and Roanoke rivers. Batts was a fur trader. He was hired by a Virginia legislator, Francis Yeardly, to explore the region known as the Albemarle Sound.
Batts had been a fur trader in the area since the mid-1650s. Batts operated a trading post and was friendly with the local tribes residing there. He was the logical choice to be part of an expedition to explore and to establish trading relationships with the natives. Batts made frequent forays into the territory which now is North Carolina and spent a significant part of his life traveling between Virginia and North Carolina.
In 1663, a charter was granted by King Charles II that included land in North and South Carolina. Though the charter was granted in 1663, Nathaniell Batts deserves credit for establishing a colony in North Carolina and making the land grant a profitable venture for the investors.
