Because Kit has moved to New England from Barbados, an island in the Caribbean Sea, it is appropriate that the Shakespeare play that she and Nat discuss is The Tempest, which takes place on a Caribbean island. Nat knows she is from there, and their discussion of the play arises out of him asking her about being homesick. The fact that he is familiar with Shakespeare’s works is significant because the Puritans frown on performance, as Kit learned when she got in trouble for introducing drama as a teaching method. The conversation also arises when they are both at Hannah’s cottage where Nat brings up the play’s themes of captivity as contrasted to freedom. The play is also concerned with magic, which is relevant to Hannah’s reputation as a witch.
