The mission serves oatmeal, bread, apples, and milk for breakfast.
In chapter Six, Buddy finally reaches the mission, but a man at the end of the line tells him that he's too late. The man isn't very friendly and orders Buddy to leave. Hungry and distressed, Buddy tries to argue. However, he shrinks back when the man walks menacingly towards him with a black strap.
Before he can get away, Buddy feels a massive hand around his neck. He's shocked to find a huge man behind him. This second man addresses Buddy as Clarence. He tells Buddy to get in line next to his "mother." When Buddy looks ahead, he sees that his rescuer is pointing to a woman with two children clinging to her skirts.
By this time, the man with the strap and the other people in line are complaining. However, they think twice about making an uproar after seeing the size of Buddy's rescuer. Buddy's pretend parents also take turns smacking him on the head for "staying away so long." By doing this, they manage to appease the rest of the people in line.
Inside the mission, Buddy discovers that the oatmeal is delicious. Even more important, his pretend mother puts some brown sugar into his bowl. Buddy is extremely grateful and is prompted to ask whether he will see his pretend family at dinner. They answer in the negative.
Before Buddy's pretend family leaves, the mother tells Buddy to get to the mission early for meals. As they walk away, Buddy's pretend brother sticks out his tongue at Buddy.
