An office supply store is having a clearance sale. A computer desk has an original price of $150. It is on sale for 65% off the original price. Find the sale price of the computer desk.

Discounts are used to drive sales for businesses and company’s. Sometimes this is done because the product is no longer being created, or the business is discontinuing the sale of it. This also allows the increase of inventory. In this situation, the computer desk is 65% off, it can be assumed that the company is creating space for new inventory.
The answer can be found a number of ways. If the student is familiar with percentage to decimal conversions then then the problem can be completed as follows;
To find the the sale price of the computer desk, one must first convert the percent into a decimal. 65% converted into a decimal is .65. After the conversion, one must multiply 150 and .65 to find the amount of the discount.
150 x .65= 97.50
the amount of money the customer is saving is 97.50. This is not the final answer though, the question is asking the final sale price of the desk. The next step to complete is subtracting 97.50 from 150.

150 - 97.50 = 52.50.

Therefore, the final sale price of the computer desk is $52.50.

Another way this can be calculated is by take 150 x 65/100 to find the dollar amount for 65% off. This way would work for anyone who does not know how to convert percentages to decimals.

150 x 65/100= 97.50

Again to find the final price, you must subtract 97.50 from 150.

150-97.50 = $52.50

These are two ways one can answer this question.

Let p be the original price of computer desk: p=$150
Let s be the sale price of computer desk: s=?

S= $150-0.65($150)=$150-$97.50=$52.50
S=$52.50

The first thing we need to look at is, what are we trying to find from this problem. The common misconception of students is to immediately jump to "what is 65% of $150?"
While this will help us solve the problem, it does not solve the problem that is being asked - What is the sale price of the computer desk.
We can look at solving this 2 separate ways.
1) Subtract the 65% amount from $150 to find the sale amount.
or
2) Find the unknown percentage first, then compute the sale amount.
Let's start with Method #1:
First, we need to convert the 65% to a decimal by either moving the decimal point 2 places to the left or by dividing by 100. Either way the result would be 0.65.
Next, we will multiply the original price of $150 by 0.65. Here is a link to a scientific calculator from desmos.com: https://www.desmos.com/scientific
Our result is $97.50. However, this is the amount that is being discounted. So lastly, we will need to subtract 97.50 from 150 to find our sale price of $52.50.

Method #2:
Sometimes it might make more sense to find the percentage you want to know. In this problem we want to know the SALE price, not the DISCOUNT price.
First let's subtract the discount percentage from 100% to find the sale percentage:100 - 65 = 35%.
Now convert the 35% to a decimal by either moving the decimal point 2 places to the left or by dividing by 100. This would give us 0.35.
Finally, multiply 0.35 by the starting price of $150. 0.35 * 150 = 52.5
So our sale price would be $52.50.

Either method would be effective in finding the result. Choose the one that makes the most sense to you!

Surrounding sales and percentages, there are many approaches to settling an answer. As we look at percentage being out of 100, it is identified that a 65% sale would result in a 35% cost (100-65 = 35), prior to tax being added. In order to solve this problem with a calculator, one might consider entering the following: 150 x .35 to get an answer of 52.50.This implies 52.50 is 35% of the cost, thus being the clearance amount paid. An additional way to solve the problem is to subtract 65% of the cost from the original amount, leaving the discount amount as the result. (150 x .65 = 97.5) With this information, 97.50 can be subtracted from the original to leave the final price (150-97.50 = 52.50).

In order to find the solution to this problem, you would divide 65/100, since percentages are always out of 100. 100 is a base 10, so really all you need to do is move the decimal point from 65. to .65.
The next step is to take $150 x .65. The answer is $97.50. 65% of $150 is $97.50.
Now, you subtract $97.50 from $150 in order to get the sale price of the computer desk. The sale price of the desk would be $52.50.

Companies often use sales measured by percentages in order to drive sales or to move product in order to bring in new goods. These sales are often measured in increments of either ten or twenty-five, but sixy-five percent off is possible. To answer the question, one must convert the percent to a decimal. When one does this, 65% becomes .65.
The next step is to multiply $150 and .65 in order to find the new price. When one does this, one gets $97.50 as the new price of the computer desk. Of course, this is not counting any delivery fees or sales tax one may incur in the purchase of the desk. In order to complete the purchase, one usually must calculate sales tax as well. This can be calculated the same way by multiplying the tax rate (as a decimal) by the purchase price, then adding the taxes to the price of the desk.
Some exam questions may ask for the amount of money saved in the sale. If this is the question, subtract the sale price from the original price. It is important to note which will answer the question. When asking for the final sale price of the desk, the answer is $97.50.
