August had worked as a housekeeper for Lily's mother's family. That's how she knows that Lily is Deborah's daughter. When Lily first rocked up at August's place with Rosaleen in tow, she claimed to be an orphan. But August knew that wasn't the case. Nevertheless, she kindly invited Lily and Rosaleen into her home. August didn't want to let on that she knew who Lily was as she believed that Lily wasn't yet ready to face the truth. And it's an especially terrible truth, involving the revelation of dark secrets from Lily's troubled childhood. It's notable that it's Lily who approaches August in this scene and not the other way round. This indicates to August that Lily is now, at long last, good and ready to hear the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, of what really happened to her mother.
