It is hard to say what are advantages and disadvantages of being a teenager as this varies based on many different factors. If we are talking about a typical teenager in the United States some advantages would be that as a teenager you have granted basic life needs such as food, water, shelter, clothing with out having to join the workforce. Being able to experiment and figure out a path in life without the fear or need for monetary gains is another advantage of being a teenager. Not having to think about civil duties such has v voting, jury duty. etc are advantages. Teenagers have the advantage of high metabolism.
In contrast, not being able to vote can be seen as disadvantage. Also, teenagers are not able to legal consume certain products; alcohol, cigarettes, cannabis( depending on state). Being a teenager means feeling uncertain of where you fit into society and not fully understanding self can be a disadvantage.
From a developmental point of view, being a teenager has a few disadvantages: some parts of the brain fully develop only in mid-twenties. Therefore, rational thinking and the ability to foresee the outcomes of one's actions become available after 23-25 years of age. That also affects the capacity to understand and effectively manage one's feelings. That's why teenagers are known for their impulsive behavior and mood swings. However, when a person develops the reasoning skill, he or she often gain some sort of cognitive bias. The notion of cognitive bias relates to a tendency to think and act in a certain way - the way that person is used to think or act based on the experience. Mark Twain's quote illustrates it well: "To a man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail."Teenagers maybe have not that much experience, but they haven't developed a narrow-mindedness which many adults have; and to a great extent, they do not suffer from cognitive bias. The main advantage of being a teenager is the ability to think freely, form an opinion and see things as they are.
The advantages and disadvantages to adolescence vary by country.
In the United States, in most circumstances, teenagers are guaranteed basic life necessities such as housing and food without the expectation of labor.
However, at the same time, teenagers do not enjoy a legal personality in most contexts; they cannot vote, enter into a contract, nor possess a firearm. They are also prohibited from the consumption of some products which are otherwise legal for the population at large, such as alcohol and tobacco. Finally, while they are permitted to enter into the workforce, it is at an unequal level relative to adults. For instance, teenagers are generally limited to the amount of work they can perform and are restricted from some professions, such as military service.
