Newt is very brotherly towards Thomas in the novel The Maze Runner. He is a boy who is wise beyond his years, having lived in the maze longer than Thomas. He takes the newcomer under his wing and helps him learn to adapt to life in the confusing world of the maze.
Newt truly seems to care for Thomas, constantly encouraging him and choosing to spend time talking with him and teaching him about their life in the maze. Thomas grows very fond of Newt, seeing him as a best friend and something of a mentor or guide. Their friendship is constantly close and they share a brotherly, protective bond over one another, ensuring that they are both taken care of.
