For the Halloween pageant, Mrs. Merryweather had the idea that all the children should dress as the county's chief agricultural products. Scout is far from happy when she learns that she has been assigned to wear the costume of a ham.
The costume is made of chicken wire with fabric. Scout does not like wearing it. Aside from the very idea, it is hot and scratchy, snd she can barely see out of it.
The costume figures in the plot, however, when the children are attacked on the way home. The thick bulky thing blocks a knife from cutting her. The obscured vision also keeps her from seeing clearly either the attacker or her rescuer. Only later does Scout learn that Boo saved her.
