The Book of Embraces is a 1989 collection of poetic stories (both real and fictional), memoirs, commentaries, and anecdotes written by one of the most important Latin American writers: Eduardo Galeano. In it, Galeano incorporates a plethora of socially relevant themes such as culture, politics, violence and tyranny, the effects of the media on society, courage, human nature, friendship, the beauty of art, the meaning of dreams, modernity, folklore, and tradition.
The book received a lot of positive reviews and many consider it to be one of Galeano's most inspiring, beautiful, emotional, intimate, and captivating works. The true meaning or message of the book is very simple but also very powerful. Essentially, Galeano tells us that we need to 'embrace' each other; this world needs and deserves love and kindness. We need to become aware of what is happening around us, and we must change and realize that we are capable of being good, just, and humane; all we need to do is wake up and embrace the truth.
