The Colony of Virginia was established by colonists such as John Rolfe in 1607 in Jamestown. The name “Virginia” was coined from Queen Elizabeth I’s moniker “Virgin Queen.” Before colonists from England formed Virginia, it was occupied by the Indian community. However, war between the European colonists and Indians not forgetting the spread of new diseases had a negative impact on the Indian society, which gave the British an upper hand. John Rolfe farmed tobacco, which was well received in England. The success of tobacco farming enabled the colony to flourish. Virginia formed its local government in 1619 after a consensus by the General Assembly. Prior to this, the Virginia Company of London was responsible for the colony. Virginia was initially characterized by white indentured servants who toiled in the tobacco farms.
