This book could reflect on our present world in a variety of ways, and each reader might see different correlations between the book and present day times.
Personally, I like pushing students to examine Mildred. Bradbury's story predicted a possible future, yet I see Mildred quite effectively reflecting culture and media usage of today. She is obsessed with consuming media. If she is not watching hours and hours of television, then she is plugged into her headphones. She spends more time talking and discussing the lives of fictional characters than she does talking to her husband about real life.
I've been teaching a media class for 15 years, and I've been tracking average media usage numbers as part of the class. Media consumption has only ever increased in the last 15 years. The current average is that an adult spends more than 11 hours per day consuming media of some kind. Mildred might be an appalling character in the novel, and that could be because of how well she reflects our own world.
