After Jonas is selected to be the community's next Receiver of Memory, he begins to experience a distance from his peers, family, and neighbors. The citizens recognize that Jonas has been selected to an extremely prestigious position and begin to view Jonas in awe.
When Jonas finally sees his best friend, Asher, near the bicycles, Asher hesitates to say hello to him, and Jonas notices the uncertainty in Asher's behavior. Asher is both hesitant and uncertain because he does not understand Jonas's enigmatic, exclusive Assignment.
Jonas's peers have no clue what the Receiver of Memory's responsibilities are and view Jonas with suspicion and uncertainty. Despite being Jonas's best friend, Asher is not sure how to treat Jonas, who has been identified as different from everyone in their peer group. Jonas is set apart from his peers, which is unusual in his highly-regulated society. Asher is experiencing a myriad of emotions after witnessing Jonas receive his new title and is unsure how to treat his revered, specially-selected friend, which is why Asher hesitates when he speaks to Jonas after the ceremony.
