What reward does Melinda get for going to school on time for a week?

Melinda is becoming increasingly withdrawn and depressed after her shocking ordeal. But instead of being concerned about her daughter's condition or trying to get to the bottom of things, Melinda's mother is more angry and frustrated than anything else. In due course, Melinda eventually starts putting in effort at school, although this is mainly because playing the part of a good girl gives her the opportunity to escape from her normal self, the self that she hates so much.
Melinda's student counselor thinks that she deserves a reward for her improved behavior, so Melinda's mom decides to take her shopping for clothes at the store she owns. While her mom is busy on the phone, Melinda tries on several pairs of jeans and a sweatshirt. Far from being a reward, though, the whole experience is a terrible ordeal for Melinda. For someone with low self-esteem, someone who hates everything about her appearance, posing in front of a mirror while trying on clothes is an absolute nightmare.
