Ulysses S. Grant (1822–1885) achieved fame for his generalship in the Civil War and his presidency afterwards. He was a significant military and political leader for the US, and he is best known for his achievements on the battlefield . There are many interesting facts about his eventful life.
First, he was very adept as a Civil War general. His campaign that captured Vicksburg was especially masterful. He was also the only general that was not intimidated by Robert E. Lee.
Second, he was magnanimous in victory. He did not punish the leaders or soldiers in the armies that surrendered to him. He also saved Robert E. Lee from prosecution after the war.
Third, his presidency was marred by corruption and was not nearly as successful as his generalship. He lacked political experience, and the people who served under him were not honest. Grant, to his credit, supported the passage of the fifteenth Amendment—giving African-American men the right to vote.
Fourth, he was a capable writer. His memoirs were written in the last year of his life. They are a testament to his command of the English language.
And finally, Grant failed in civilian life. In the 1850s, he failed at farming and in business. After his presidency, upon his return to civilian life, he was swindled by a partner and went bankrupt.
