Please offer some historical or biographical background.

Voyage in the Dark was written by Jean Rhys (1890 – 1979) and is strongly autobiographical. Rhys' was the daughter of a Welsh doctor and Creole mother. She moved from Dominica in the West Indies to England in 1906, when she was 16, to attend school. Although Voyage in the Dark itself was published in 1934, it reflects back on Rhys' experience in the 1910s and 1920s.
