"Federalist No. 10" is an essay written by James Madison and is part of The Federalist Papers series, which as a collection argued for the ratification of the United States Constitution. The essay was published in 1787 under Madison's pen name "Publius."
In "Federalist No. 10," Madison opined that men inherently have a tribal mentality and are prone to put their self-interest before the common welfare of the people. In the essay, Madison warned against the dangers of alliances, particularly among powerful and wealthy groups who would go against the interests of the American citizenry.
The essay showed that Madison was an outsider in terms of how he believed the United States government should function. The Founding Fathers believed in factionalism, whereas Madison warned that factions would be detrimental to the architecture of democracy. Madison believed that representative democracy was a better option than partisan politics.
So what would James Madison think of our current political system? That would depend on which dominant party is in power in the Senate and in the White House. While it is easy to believe that Madison is a textbook, traditional Republican, he would also be highly critical of the current Republican Party's alliances with Wall Street executives.
Overall, I believe that James Madison would be dismayed by the vitriol between Liberals and Conservatives in the current American political climate. The partisan politics in the United States today goes against the very thesis of "Federalist No. 10."
Although we cannot know for certain what Madison's opinion would be regarding the modern Democratic Party and the GOP, based on his essay he would consider the extremist sub-cultures within both parties as dangers to the country.

Overall, do you believe James Madison would be pleased or upset with the state of American government in light of the beliefs he articulated in The Federalist, Paper Number 10?
