In what ways do Jane Sharp, Will, Purr, Edward, Jennet, and Magister Reese all help Alyce to find her place in the world in The Midwife's Apprentice?

Of all of those characters, I think Jane Sharp has the biggest impact on transforming Alyce and helping her find her place in the world. Prior to meeting Jane Sharp, Alyce was a homeless beggar scrounging for food scraps. She looked so miserable that Sharp called her "Beetle"; however, Sharp took Alyce in. This is key because it allowed Alyce to move up a few levels of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Because Alyce no longer has to spend every waking minute figuring out to physically survive, she can begin working to improve her mental and emotional needs.
Sharp helps with this because Sharp gives Alyce a place to live and food to eat. Sharp also begins teaching Alyce about herbs and medicines. What Sharp doesn't realize is how much Alyce is learning by watching Sharp as well. Alyce is secretly watching Sharp do midwife deliveries, and Alyce is slowly becoming more and more proficient at one day becoming a midwife herself. Reese also functions as an educator for Alyce by enhancing her reading skills and broadening her base knowledge. What neither Reese nor Sharp give Alyce is companionship. It is Purr that gives Alyce a sense of love and companionship.
