What dangerous way do the Walls children travel to Battle Mountain?

In his deluded quest for gold, Rex takes his family off to Battle Mountain in Nevada. It's just the latest in a long of line of moves that Jeanette and her family are forced to undergo as part of their nomadic lifestyle. Unfortunately, Battle Mountain is a long way off, and will take an absolute age to reach. Rex is even more paranoid than usual after his close run-in with the police in Blythe, and so he doesn't want to run the risk of being caught again. So he decides to rent a U-Haul truck in which his family will make the fourteen hour journey to their latest destination.
As well as being long and hard, the journey's also dangerous. The kids, including Maureen the new-born baby, are forced to hide in the cold and dark of the truck's storage space while their parents ride up front. The back doors of the truck haven't been shut properly and so they regularly swing open, putting the kids in serious danger. In order to stop themselves falling out of the truck, the kids have to hang on tightly to the tied-down items of furniture. It's only when a passing car signals to Rex that the truck doors are open that he stops and closes them. The children are safe for now, but it was a close call; they could so easily have been killed.
