Herbert Hoover was a member of the Republican Party. Then as now, the Republicans tended to represent the interests of the wealthier members of society. And Hoover was certainly one of those. Thanks to his outstanding abilities as a mining engineer and his eye for a wise investment opportunity, he became phenomenally rich at a very young age, amassing a fortune in excess of $100 million in today's money.
Hoover joined the Republicans as he believed that they stood for the same values as himself, the values of hard work, thrift, and private enterprise. These were the very same values that Hoover attempted to put into practice during his presidency, even as the Great Depression ravaged the country. He firmly believed that, even in the midst of such economic chaos, Americans shouldn't look to the government to bail them out of their difficulties. Instead, he recommended that they follow his example of rugged individualism and provide for themselves and their families.
