The First Great Awakening came about at a time when the colonies were religiously divided and when more secular ideas, such as rationalism, were leading to lower attendance at church services. The population was essentially going through the motions in many churches and disillusionment was on the rise.
In the colonies, Jonathan Edwards is largely credited with starting the First Great Awakening. His message was that all humans are born as sinners and need salvation from Jesus and God in order to attain heaven. He preached that faith alone was sufficient to obtain this salvation. His most famous sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" was jarring for the time. News of the sermon was spread widely and helped to gain new adherents to this evangelical view.
