There are many events that take place over the course of this novel, and different readers may pick out slightly different main events to answer a question like this; therefore, feel free to add or eliminate from the following story events.
I would start out the list with something that points out Esperanza's pampered life in Mexico. From there, the second event would be the death of Esperanza's father at the hands of bandits. Next is Papa's stepbrother taking over and burning down the house.
After that, I would choose the family's journey to the United States and having to leave their grandmother behind as a major event. Another pivotal moment is when Esperanza's mother gets sick, and Esperanza is forced to do earn most of the money for the family. She eventually earns enough to get Abuelita into the United States, but then the money goes missing along with Miguel.
Finally, Miguel returns with Abuelita, and Esperanza turns fourteen.
