Who is Nicholas Chandler in Spoon River Anthology? What kind of life does he live?

Chandler Nicholas is a meticulous person who takes good care of his health and appearance, but he regrets his lonely life, as he has no one “to take delight” in these things. He is also fond of books and does daily meditation, but he has no one with whom to share the wisdom he derives from such activities. He mentions that he has “no agora,” which was the ancient Greek public square where people exchanged ideas. He feels willing to engage in such interactions, but people do not seek him out. He feels “useful, but useless.” Nicholas also alludes to Prometheus, who was chained to a rock and vultures ate his liver; Nicholas is chained to this town but the birds scorn his liver. Rather, he devours himself.
