In chapter eighteen, Leo realizes that everyone at school is giving him and Stargirl the silent treatment. This bothers him, so in chapter nineteen, he goes to Archie for advice.
Archie is a retired paleontologist and former college professor, and he is a wise man who is able to counsel kids like Leo. At first, Archie tells Leo to stay away from Stargirl. Leo says he can't, and Archie explains he didn't really mean it. He wanted Leo to admit to himself that he doesn't want to stay away from her. Archie admits Stargirl is different, and Leo wishes she were a bit more like the others so he wouldn't be conflicted.
Through the cactus SeƱor Saguaro, Archie asks Leo:
"Whose affection do you value more, hers or the others's?"
Leo does not want to answer the question. Archie tells him to think about it. Archie helps Leo work through the problem instead of directly telling him what to do.
