Readers should look through chapter 21 for the answer to this question. The very first sentence of the chapter gives readers two very important pieces of information. First, being at Gordon's ranch has been an amazing three years for Beauty. Second, sadness is coming. Readers do not have to wait long to figure out why sadness is coming. The mistress of the house has been in poor health for quite some time, and the doctor recommends that she leave for warmer climates for two to three years. The news hits everybody, including the horses, quite hard. The impact of the news is told to readers in a great simile. We are told that the news of Gordon leaving was similar to the "tolling of a deathbell." Beauty's idyllic world is falling apart, and the news hits everybody as hard a death announcement.
The news fell upon the household like the tolling of a deathbell. Everybody was sorry; but the master began directly to make arrangements for breaking up his establishment and leaving England.
