How does religion teach people to live their lives?

Religion is the belief and worship of a supernatural power that is a God and plays a great role in different dimensions in our lives.
Religion is important as it provides social cohesion that maintains social solidarity through shared rituals and beliefs. It maintains control in society by the enforcement of religious based morals to shape character in individuals.
People who believe in the existence of a God are more happier, content and are less depressed with indicators of psychological well-being (life satisfaction, happiness, positive affect, and higher morale). Religious involvement Is associated with less depression, fewer suicidal thoughts, and less drug alcohol abuse. This is because religion helps us to focus on the supernatural being for our psychological and physical needs.

Religion is one of the cornerstones of morality and laws and a predominant factor in character building. Historians and scientists both agree that religion has always shaped how we should live our lives. Alfred North Whitehead, a well known Western philosopher once said:

Your character is developed according to your faith. This is the primary religious truth from which no one can escape.

The moral ground people gain from religion helps shape how we treat each other, and it inspires ethics, generosity, help to the needy, integrity and compassion. It also inspires moral principles like honesty, equality, tolerance, justice, righteousness, sacrifice, brotherhood, and other virtues.
In general, most religious groups are concerned having followers live an ethical and moral life that their God would approve of. The purpose of life in regards to religion thus is to avoid angering God who has control over the world by treating each other how we expect to be treated ourselves.

This is a question that humanity has longed to answer throughout all time. As our times become more and more existential, the answer to this question becomes a bit muddled. In our society today, it appears the answer would be to gain wealth and status. Man has religion to give meaning to his life, and depending on that religion's teaching, it would appear that serving others is how we should live. Christianity suggests the 10 Commandments, 5 of which give us a guide for how we should live in relation to others. All world religions contain elements of the Golden Rule, which is a trustworthy answer to "How should we then live?" Service to others meets the Golden Rule tenets, and provides meaning to our life beyond ourselves.

Religion offers one type of answer to the question of how we should live our lives. While solutions vary from religion to religion, they do have certain elements in common.
Most religions assume the existence of one or more gods and assert that a morally good life is one of which the gods approve. Many religions have scriptural texts which set out both moral and behavioral guidelines for their followers. Some religions offer detailed prescriptions concerning diet, lifestyle, and required religious observances, while other religions offer more general guidelines concerning morality and piety.
In general, religious groups believe that our purpose in life is not simply to acquire material goods or maximize sensual pleasure. Instead, most religions argue that life has a higher purpose and that people should act in a way that respects God (or gods) and other people. Most religions emphasize the importance of treating other people well and doing some form of charitable or good works.
