In Greek mythology, Helios is the sun god. The Romans identify Helios with Sol, their personification of the sun god.
Helios is the son of Hyperion and Theia. His siblings include Selene and Eos. His offspring include Circe and Phaethon. One of the most well-known episodes in Greek mythology involving Helios is that in which Phaethon requests his father for a ride in his chariot. The sun god obliges, and lends his chariot to his son, who cannot control the horses. Zeus is then forced to strike down the chariot with his thunderbolt in order to prevent it from setting the earth on fire.
Helios assisted Hercules when the hero set out to perform his tenth labor—securing the Cattle of Geryon. The sun god gifts Hercules the huge golden bowl which the former used each night to journey from the West to the East.
