Anachrony is used widely in Ian McEwan's novel, Enduring Love. The type of anachrony used in the story are flashbacks. This is because the central event that affects the entire outcome of the narrative happens in the beginning. The hot air balloon accident brings various strangers together in unexpected ways.
It becomes an event that causes the intersection of lives, whether it's Joe and his obsessed stalker, Jed, or the widowed wife of Logan, who was present at the incident. Logan's wife is particularly interested in the who her late husband was with on that fateful day, because she suspected him of being there with his mistress.
Therefore, the novel features many flashbacks to the incident to illustrate Joe and others trying to remember the details of the day. It is akin to a mystery novel, in which a particular event is analyzed repeatedly in order to find the truth.
