There are a number of technologies being used by geographers these days, including GIS (Geographic Information Systems), GPS (Geographic positioning system), remote sensing, location-based services, and so on. Some of these techniques have been around for the last few decades and have helped in creating real-life, real-time applications in the field of geography.
GIS is the key application of technology in geography. This technology allows the geographers to put spatial information on maps. This means that any information such as the area under cultivation by any crop, course of a river, path taken by lava flow after a volcanic eruption, amount of devastation by a natural disaster, level of air pollution generated by different areas, etc. can be overlaid on a map and presented in a better manner than keeping all the information on paper. GIS can also help in the 3D presentation of such spatial information.
