Zachary Taylor's (1784–1850) greatest accomplishments were achieved as a leader on the battlefield. He is less known for his brief presidency, which lasted only 16 months.
From an early age, he knew he wanted a military career. He and most of his brothers joined the army. Zachary Taylor served in the army for about 40 years. He served in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War (1832), and the Seminole War (1835–42). He defeated the Seminoles at the Battle of Lake Okeechobee, (25–28 December 1837). Taylor's greatest victory, however, was at the Battle of Buena Vista, during the Mexican War (1846–1848).
Prominent because of his military success, Taylor was chosen by the Whigs to be their presidential candidate. Taylor had not had any previous political experience, but he was a war hero. Upon becoming president in 1849, he faced the problem of North-South tension over the expansion of slavery. America took over vast lands in the West after the defeat of Mexico. The North did not want slavery extended into those areas. The pro-slavery South had the opposite view.
Although he grew up in a slave-owning family in Kentucky and was himself a slave owner, Taylor did not want slavery to expand. In addition to the sectional conflict, his administration had a financial scandal involving some of his cabinet members. After Taylor's death, the Compromise of 1850 was passed; this measure postponed civil war for ten years.
