What are some important facts about the colony of Georgia?

There are plenty of important facts about the colony of Georgia. Georgia was founded in 1732 by James Oglethorpe. King George made sure to name it after himself in the charter. Like most colonies, the purpose of Georgia was to become a refuge from religious persecution.
Georgia was also established as a way to protect South Carolina. South Carolina was facing imminent threats from the Spanish in Florida and the French in Louisiana. The belief was that Georgia could serve as a buffer between these two threats.
Another important fact was that the desire for Georgia was to be anti-slavery. Oglethorpe did not believe in slavery; however, that obviously changed, as Georgia was a slave state until the Civil War. In fact, Georgia had the highest slave population in colonial America at that time. Tobacco and cotton were the two primary resources in colonial Georgia.
