Lucy, Rachel, and Esperanza receive a gift of some high-heeled shoes. At first, the girls are pretty excited about them. The shoes look great and make them feel beautiful and glamorous. They also make them feel like grown-ups, which is very important for girls of their age.
But when the girls start wearing their new shoes outside, that's when the problems start. First of all, the guy who owns the corner store tells the girls that the shoes are dangerous and that they should take them off. Then a boy on a bike starts shouting at them. To make matters worse, a tramp then tells Rachel she looks pretty and offers her a dollar to kiss him. It's patently obvious to the girls that these high-heel shoes are attracting way too much attention, and of the wrong kind, too. So they head back to Mango Street as soon as possible and hide the shoes in a bag under the back porch.
