What is the main idea of Woza Albert!?

Set in South Africa sometime before 1981 (when it premiered), the play presents the second coming of Jesus Christ. The playwrights Percy Mtwa, Mbongeni Ngema, and Barney Simon create a situation in which the person that others recognize as Christ, named Morena, is a black man. In South Africa’s rigidly racist society, the white ruling class not only refuses to believe in Christ’s return but persecutes and imprisons Morena.
The main idea that the authors present is the parallel between the repressive regime that was responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus and the modern South African state. Along with criticizing the mistreatment of black South Africans and the white elites’ hypocrisy, they promote the importance of Christian values such as compassion.
