Martin van Buren's major accomplishment was the building of the Democratic Party. When van Buren started his political life, he aligned with the Democratic-Republican party. This was one of the more important parties of the time and consistently fought against the Whigs. Van Buren was unhappy with the state of the party and began making political deals to increase his power. When he was brought to Washington as the Secretary of State under Jackson, van Buren continued making political deals and eventually became a key adviser to Jackson. Van Buren's efforts eventually gave rise to the Democratic Party and helped it dominate in the political realm. His work also secured him the role of Vice President under Jackson and let him begin work on mitigating the damage of the Panic of 1837, though his efforts met with mixed success.
