The idea of postmodernism is to distance oneself from preconceptions and take a critical eye at the nature of our world, to challenge ourselves and come to a deeper and truer understanding. In the poem "Our Earth Will Not Die," Osundare takes just such a critical stance. He distances himself from the typical idea that politics and business are concepts that are here to help us, and instead shows how these groups—the bloated factories and poisoning governments—are damaging our world. His message is that we are detrimental to our own planet, and we must change our actions in order to stop the harm. However, he says, the Earth will not die—no, we will simply kill ourselves, and the Earth will readjust and balance itself for the surviving creatures.
"Our Earth Will Not Die" is a poem by Niyi Osundare which can be read as a "call to action" for environmental activism. Like many of the postmodern poetry that blossomed in the twentieth century—especially during the era of the beat poets—Osundare's poem contains social and political commentary. In this poem, Osundare vividly and poetically articulates the negative consequences of modern industrialization, such as the pollution of the environment and the exploitation of natural resources. Osundare describes both the natural environment and industrial entities as if they are human beings. This is a reference to the pagan concept of Mother Earth, or Mother Nature:
a lake is killed by the arsenic urinefrom the bladder of profit factories . . .
The excerpt shows the vividness in Osundare's description of both natural and man-made actors (i.e., the lake and factories). By humanizing nature, the poem elicits sympathy for the earth. On the other hand, giving a human "body" to the industrial entities reminds the reader that factories are simply inanimate structures created by humans; it is humans who are responsible for pollution. Through these postmodern elements of poetic writing and subject matter, Osundare is able to relay his message effectively to the reader.
