Martin Scorsese’s movie Hugo (2011) is an adaptation of Brian Selznick's award-winning novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret. The story chronicles a tumultuous period in the life of Hugo, a twelve-year-old orphan, who is fated to fix clocks in a bustling Paris train station. His prized possession is an automaton that his late father rescued from the museum before his death. Hugo's endeavors to repair the machine help him to solve its mystery and find a sense of purpose in life.
The character of Georges Méliès is discouraged by tragedies faced in the First World War. The realities of life have taken a toll on his creative potential. Hugo is the story of the rise, fall, and resurrection of the neglected genius.
For most of the film, the characters struggle to find meaning in their work. By the film’s end, they come to understand their role in a story that is much larger than them. Ultimately each character finds redemption in that understanding.
Hugo is a movie that celebrates people who dream big. It represents the themes of hope, courage, and perseverance.
