Flint's fist is the treasure map for Skeleton Island, drawn by the famous pirate Captain Flint. Prior to the events of the novel, Captain Flint led six other sailors of the Walrus to bury treasure on Skeleton Island. Flint then killed these men so that only he would know the location of the treasure. After Flint's death by alcohol poisoning, he bequeathed the map to his first mate, Billy Bones. While staying at the Benbow Inn, Billy Bones tells Jim that other pirates are coming to take the map. Bones dies of a stroke, and Jimmy and his mother discover Flint's fist in a sea chest after going through Bones' possessions. The map is found in Chapter 6, "The Captain's Papers." Discovery of the map launches the story's central plot to find the treasure, with Jim, squire Trelawney, and Doctor Livesey becoming part of the Hispaniola crew.
