What major events happened after the Civil War?

Following the Civil War, the United States entered the period of Reconstruction, which ran from 1865 to 1877. Right after the war ended, Lincoln was shot in April of 1865, and his plan for Reconstruction was also put to an end. Andrew Johnson became president, and he developed his own plan for Reconstruction. He was impeached (but not convicted or removed from office) in 1868, after he vetoed the Civil Rights Act (which was passed over his veto) and other acts.
The 14th Amendment to the Constitution, granting former slaves citizenship, was ratified in 1868, and the 15th Amendment, granting all men the right to vote, was ratified in 1870. Ulysses S. Grant became President in 1869. After African Americans won several national and state political offices, Southern states began to pass laws, such as the Black Codes, that restricted African Americans' rights, and the Ku Klux Klan was born in Tennessee in 1865. Reconstruction ended in 1877, when Rutherford B. Hayes became president after a disputed election in return for ending Reconstruction.
