When and where does Angels and Demons take place?

Dan Brown's Angels and Demons takes place seemingly around the same time it was written—in 2000—as references to late-twentieth-century technology and contemporary culture are present throughout the novel. The majority of the book is set in two locations. First, Robert Langdon is summoned from his home in the United States to a research institute in Switzerland in order to identify a strange insignia found on a dead body. When he realizes the insignia is a sign of the Illuminati, he realizes that this is not an isolated incident or one confined only to this location. His discovery then takes him to Vatican City, where he intends to uncover and overthrow the sinister plot of this ancient, underground, and dangerous organization.
